People have told methat “one drop of black blood determines your race,” but I opt notto follow this rule. In this country a century ago, most mixed-racechildren were products of rape or other relationships of power imbalance, but I am not. I am a child in the twenty-first century who is aproduct of a loving relationship. I choose the label andidentify with my black and Irish sides equally. I am proud to saythat my paternal great-grandparents immigrated to this country fromIreland and that I have found their names on the wall at Ellis Island, but people are rarely interested in that. They can’t get over the ideathat this girl, who according to their definition looks white, isnot.

The United States and volunteer groups sent tons of help to Haiti. These people helped build shelters and provide food for thousands of Haitian people. Another example is the mine collapse in Chile, NASA developed technology to help the miners escape for free. Without American help from NASA it may have taken much longer to get them out.
